Swan Service: Baroque Dining Culture in Perfection
Johann Joachim Kaendler und Johann Friedrich Eberlein worked more than five years on their opus magnum, which the Saxon minister Count Heinrich von Brühl had ordered: the Swan Service, which is much more than just a service.
It is a visually powerful symphony of forms, colours, and displays of light which exceeded Brühl`s wildest expectations. Every single piece is a variation on the leitmotif, the mythology of water. Glaucus, Galatea, and their entourage, sea nymphs, little Tritons, and dolphins emerge from the animated surfaces, are supported by them, or vice versea. Everything about the figurines and dishes is in flowing transition, form shaped in water. We have selected the most precious and most representative items from the entire range of the Swan Service for this festive table.
