K. O. Götz

K. O. Götz has been one of the leading exponents of “Informel” painting in Germany since the 1950’s. His powerful work imbues the painted surface with vibrant rhythm that conveys the painter’s bodily input when producing his pictures.

Biography

1914        Born in Aachen

1932        Enrolled at Aachen Arts & Crafts College

1933        First abstract works

1933-
1945        Banned from painting or exhibiting by the National Socialists, but continued painting regardless

1949        Member of the Paris-based CoBrA group of artists formed in 1948

1952        Founding member of the “Quadriga” group of artists, one of the first avantgarde groups of artists in post-war Germany

1958        Exhibited at the Biennale in Venice

1959        Exhibited at documenta II in Kassel

1959-
1979        Professorship at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, his students including Gerhard Richter, Gotthard Graubner and Sigmar Polke

1997        Founded the “K.O.Götz and Rissa Foundation”.
