MEISSEN Manufactory sets up the “MEISSEN Art Campus”
MEISSEN® is intensifying cooperation with both young and established international artists
The MEISSEN® Manufactory has announced the setting up of “MEISSEN® ART CAMPUS”. The institution aims to promote cooperation with practitioners from the fields of painting, sculpture and architecture. Europe‘s most heritage-rich manufactory is seeking in this way to tap new creativity and further consolidate its leading international position in fine porcelain art.
Dr Christian Kurtzke, Managing Director at MEISSEN®, explains the strategy thus: “We are returning to the approach adopted by the Manufactory’s one-time Director Max Adolf Pfeiffer, who in the 1920s oversaw artistic achievements of the highest order that were facilitated by intensified cooperation with outside artists. It is important to me that artists really do address themselves to our special material and location, since there’s a part of the region in every single piece of MEISSEN®.”
The Manufactory provides guest artists with specially equipped studios, work resources and input from expert craftworkers so they can put their ideas to effect. How long they stay is agreed individually and varies between a few days and a whole year. Artists are housed in hotels in the region.
We work with established big-name artists, the most recent example being the Germans Prof. Karl O. Goetz and Otto Piene, as well as with up-and-coming youngsters whose work has already been noted internationally.
Iranian painters Rokni and Ramin Haerizadeh attended the MEISSEN® ART CAMPUS last week with a view to designing new works on Meissen Porcelain® at the Manufactory. In the opinion of art historian Karin Adrian von Roques, a specialist in contemporary Islamic art, and Dr Edgar Quadt, editor of the Artinvestor magazine, the work produced by the two up-and-coming artists has already encountered great acclaim amongst art circles upon being exhibited in the Middle East, the USA and France.
“It is my long-term vision to develop MEISSEN® into a kind of ‘Mecca of contemporary art’. Many artists just love the peace and quiet and the beautiful countryside that our Elblands region offers, whilst simultaneously being deeply impressed and inspired by the artistic prowess of our 800 Manufactory staff. The creative discourse between in-house and outside artists will make for fresh stimuli and artistic vibrancy at the Manufactory”, Dr Kurtzke concludes.
It is also intended working with leading international art colleges. MEISSEN® will be very interested in receiving applications either from organisations or from individual artists in this respect.
