Court Jester Fröhlich, H 23 cm
Diverting Councillor & Court Conjurer, Most Laudable
Electoral Saxon & Royal Polish Court Mill Commissioner and
Tooth Extractor: Joseph Fröhlich has survived in the annals of
the Dresden court as well as in art history. Well, he must have
been quite a remarkable character, leading August the Strong
to tolerate him good humouredly – and Johann Joachim
Kaendler modelled him around 1737 as a table figurine in
Tyrolean costume with a jiggling head. We still take pleasure
from looking at this figure today, and enjoy tapping him on his
furrowed brow!
