The term “geisha” combines the Tokyo dialect words “gei” meaning “(performing) arts” and “sha” meaning “person”. In High Japanese, “geigi” means “lady artist”. Her high status derives from her mastering and upholding several traditional art forms. Those who can afford her presence at special events like the tea ceremony demonstrate themselves as being cultivated. She has a perfect command of courteous hospitality, of the traditional samisen (a lute instrument) and the hayashi flute, as well of song and dance. Beauty and gracefulness are taken just as much for granted in a geisha girl as are etiquette, conversational skills and a good education, the latter culminating in the art of calligraphy. Our beautiful MEISSEN® geisha is herself a celebration of superlative craftsmanship – becoming an accomplished work of art in the process.
