Urania, H 28,5 cm
The liaison between Zeus and Mnemosyne, the goddess of
memory, produced nine daughters, the Muses. As the protectresses
of the arts and sciences, they aid human beings as
long as they are deemed worthy. This elegant lady here bears
the mysterious name Urania, the heavenly. As the Muse of
astronomy, she illustrates to mortals the harmony of heaven.
To symbolise this, she carries a globe in her left hand, while
pointing the way with her right. Thus the divine rules the arts,
and the artist in turn produces its divine form anew: as Urania
in the most delicate Meissen biscuit porcelain, which in its
noble, matte gleam imitates antique marble. Modelled on classical
predecessors, it is ascribed to Christian Gottfried Jüchtzer.
