Vase "Anemones", H 37,5 cm
It was Pliny the Elder who coined the botanical term “anemone”, the Greek word “anemos” meaning “the wind”. The Roman scholar and army commander in Germany and elsewhere published “Naturalis historia”, a comprehensive natural science study that also covers botany and horticulture in depth, almost two thousand years ago. Ancient legend has it that the nymph Anemona fell in love with Zephyr, the god of the wind. Zephyr was wedded to the beautiful goddess Flora, however, who was little impressed and, in a jealous rage, turned Anemona into a flower. Thus it is that a meticulously hand-painted Anemone coronaria listens out for the wind of history on one of the oldest shapes ever to have come from the MEISSEN® Manufactory. It dates right back to 1725 or so, has never been outdone in terms of elegance and makes a worthy Limited MEISSEN® Art Work by dint of some truly accomplished floral decoration.
