This egg cup was originally a part of the "New Cutout" table service created in the mid-18th century by Meissen's master modeller Johann Joachim Kaendler. The delicate shape, reminiscent of flower petals, with a corrugated, pointed edge, is a rare example of Baroque modesty and has served as a canvas for countless famous designs. The "Ming Dragon" is one of the manufactory's oldest decorative motifs and an excellent example of MEISSEN chinoiserie. In a departure from the imperial tradition depicting the dragon with five toes, Meissen's rendition typically features four. Painted onto each egg cup by hand, the venerable, richly detailed dragon is framed in befitting splendour by a 24-carat gold edge along the base and opening of the cup.
