The shape of the covered vase with "Summer Frolics" was originally created between 1775 and 1780. The motif was produced in consummate "pâte-sur-pâte", a complex painting technique from the second half of the 19th century. Intricate relief moulding in wafer-thin layers of white porcelain against a ground of delicate rosewood lends the motifs produced a serenely three-dimensional quality. Its handles fastidiously modelled as writhing snakes, dense foliate wreaths encompass the cover and base of a vase discreetly finished off with a border band in gilt.
