Nymphs are the representation of the sensual feminine. Girlish and divine, eternally young, but mortal, free wandering and yet bound to nature. With such characteristics, in the emerging age of machines, the nymphs face the man-made, as fleeting deities of natural elements. Melancholy arises at the thought that the spring could dry up in its flow - then the lovely nymph would have to die instantly. The sculptor Emmerich Andresen succeeded in this fine translation; he wanted to preserve the traditions of the arts and yet hit the nerve of a new era.
