Our whale shark glides sleekly, gently and little short of hypnotically through the water. The young plastic artist Maximilian Hagstotz has captured in porcelain the impressive encounter he had with the largest fish in the world whilst out snorkelling by the Ningaloo Reef in western Australia. The whale shark is the principal pictorial device, a huge placid shape hovering above all else. Beneath it, he has added tiny abstracted shoaling fish to counterbalance the whale shark's serene tranquillity. The painted detail is particularly alluring: Maximilian Hagstotz first employed underglaze colours to decorate a sculptured figure for the ray he created in 2018.
