Frank Michaelis - Artful Crystal Worlds

Frank Michaelis

“Microscopes were always my favourite kind of tool. They satisfy your curiosity and you soon realise how wonderfully beautiful in terms of its form, colour and proportion microcosmic matter actually is. My aim with crystal glazes was to render that beauty visible to the eyes of all and sundry.”

Frank Michaelis was born at Eula near Leipzig. After graduating in Chemistry, he worked as a ceramics expert in industry, where he was ever intent on creating the perfectly beautiful. In his capacity as an artist, Frank Michaelis succumbed to the fascination of crystalline worlds on porcelain many years ago. “The creative tension between the human ability to control and predict events by technical means and the inner workings of crystals grips my imagination afresh with every new item”, the artist revealingly confesses. It is this that drives him to experiment with crystal glazes and pigments, to vary firing times and also to try out unconventional modelling techniques.

Mr Michaelis has travelled all round the world, spending twenty years of his life abroad. Deeply etched in his mind are impressions of China, Kazakhstan, Peru and Columbia, are the colours he saw when diving in the unspoilt Caribbean and from which he derives inspiration for the experiments he conducts today.
