Although the sculptor Kirchner initially found it difficult to deal artistically with sculptural material, he developed alongside Johann Joachim Kaendler into a master of Meissen large animal sculpture. The two modellers found the templates for their sculptures on scientific panels, in the natural history cabinet with stuffed animals and in the menageries and aviaries around the Moritzburger Schloss directly on site. In contrast to Kaendler, Kirchner did not focus on dynamics but on characteristic expression.
