Box with snowball blossoms in relief, H 7 cm

A dazzling carpet of tiny white stellar florets caresses the eye. It's only when you go to savour their fragrance that you realise they are made of porcelain. Shape, relief-moulding and versatile colouring combine to produce a captivating naturalness whose roots date back to the age of Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775). His creations add up to what was literally the first great flowering at MEISSEN®. Not only did the legendary porcelain artist manage to imbue figures with a naturalness then unknown, he was also adept at turning vessels and utilitarian ware into major works of art.
He authored the famous "Snowball Blossom Pattern" in 1739 for a tableware service that King Augustus the Third gave his wife Maria Josepha as a present. Myriad sculpted white flower-heads engulf each item.
They have a long tradition at MEISSEN® and have now been re-interpreted for this Limited-Edition Artwork. Some of their tiny white calyxes have become suffused with the vessel's shape, whilst others are piled irregularly up. The painter has used delicate brush-strokes to further enhance the authentic sense of depth. Fragrance is the only thing missing from this little work of art. Its floral splendour at any rate is intransient.
