Clock with lovers, H 22 cm

Adopting lateral volutes of the kind that have adorned facades since the Renaissance, Meissen artist Johannes Theodor Paul Helmig (1859-1939) chose to fashion the art nouveau clockcase he designed in 1904 in the shape of a gable. These scroll-shaped devices round off elegantly curving ornament picked out in gold. They are additionally sprigged with finely moulded roses and apples, symbols of love and seduction. The richly folded cloth that has been draped over the case, flowingly modelled and full of motion, is typically art nouveau. It enshrouds a pair of lovers devotedly turning to face each other from either side. The girl reaches out her hand to the boy over the top of the circular clock. Their youth and love are reminders that time is there to be enjoyed. How quickly it passes is indicated by the golden numerals and hands on the porcelain clockface. The mechanical works tell the time by causing a small gong to sound on the hour and half past the hour - reminding us of the truly precious things in life.
