Covered vase with "Motifs from the Arabian Nights", H 45 cm

The harmony engendered between scenes from "The Arabian Nights" and a decorative covered vase from the Manufactory's earliest years is something of a fairy-tale in itself. The timeless shape was recently rediscovered in the richly stocked MEISSEN® archives and acquires added modernity with an enchantingly whimsical pattern from the 1960s by Professor Heinz Werner (*1928). The work of this major artist, who created just on 100 patterns and countless one-offs during his 50-year career at MEISSEN® and is internationally acclaimed, is steeped in jovial light-heartedness. The element of fairy-tale is central to Werner's oeuvre. He structures and portrays his motifs from "The Arabian Nights" in a manner that recalls sketches from the Schulz Codex by Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696-1775).
Elke Dannenberg has chosen to adorn the body of her vase with scenes from the palace that form part of Werner's vast store of motifs. Filigree paintwork transforms the vase's neck into a tower with windows at which further characters that fire our imagination stand. High-carat gilding heightens the vessel's styling, as it does the effect of these miniature Arabian palace tales, tales replete with an infectious sense of life being enjoyed.
