Covered vase with pheasants, H 33 cm

The pheasant has its origins in South-West Asia and features large in a great many myths and legends - in China as a symbol of happiness, light and wealth and in Japan emblematic of fertility, virtuousness and affluence. Such was the shimmering beauty of this luxury poultry when grilled it was even served complete with its plumage at the Baroque banquets of the European royal courts.

The painting on this sumptuous covered Meissen vase requires just three colours to render the bird in all its significance and glory to captivating effect - a major artistic feat that presupposes a great deal of talent and long experience in painting on porcelain. Pheasants are portrayed in cobalt blue in the three cartouches: a pair of green pheasants in front of auspicious azalea, a gold pheasant backed by peony, indicative of refinement and wealth. The silver pheasant standing on a rock represents the gift of observing life from a higher vantage-point. The major challenge confronting the artist concerns imparting a sense of depth to motifs using a single colour. Red and gold are then added to render stylised tree peonies whose profligate blooms encompass the vessel - refined, consummate, opulent!
