Crater Vase "Rich flower and fruit painting", H 47 cm

The shape of the majestic calyx crater, a vessel used to mix water and wine, was thought up in an Attic pottery studio in the sixth century B.C. Sophilos is the earliest documented creator of such works of art. Craters in the vein of this MEISSEN® Art Work came back into their own in the Classicist era. Their true art lies in the way they are made, great skill and practice being required by the modeller when dealing with their weight and size. The heaviness of the wet paste works against the form the vessel is lent, the drying and firing processes are fraught with risk, and decorating the outside of the huge vessel is a challenge for the porcelain painter, too. He or she works on the lavish bouquet of hydrangeas without seeing its real colours, which only emerge after firing. Achieving a successful masterpiece presupposes the harmonious interplay of modeller and porcelain painter – as has clearly been the case here!
