Figurine "Girl with doll and basket of flowers", H 16 cm

This portrayal of a girl dreamily at play has echoes of the famous "Hentschel Children" series. The talented young modeller Julius Konrad Hentschel (1872-1907) had created a completely new genre within the tradition of porcelain sculpture with his sensitive view of the world. He invited children from the alleys of Meissen into his studio " which contemporaries report as having often resembled a children's room " as if intent on reclaiming his own past at the end of his short life. His tiny tots also influenced other artists at the Manufactory.
This figurine edition was conceived by Paul Helmig in 1911. It is of a girl completely and utterly engrossed in playing with her doll. Nothing, it seems, could distract her. The onlooker can hardly avoid being spellbound by such a scene of bliss.
