"Flora with Cherubs" vase, Limoges-style enamelling, H 31 cm

As well as invigorating the spirit and mesmerising the senses, perfumes also purify the air, or at least that's what was thought in the early eighteenth century. During the profligate Baroque era, it was considered chic amongst courtly circles to install potpourri vessels containing precious scents from France. Because the vase was also intended to have an ornamental impact it was fashioned in a particularly showy manner. Its exquisitely modelled snake handles and moulded border bands are decorated in 23-carat gold that contrasts dazzlingly with the cobalt-blue ground. The masterful Limoges-style enamelling by Meissen artist Lydia Schrenk, furthermore, generates a captivatingly subtle sense of space on the deep-blue ground. Serving as the source of inspiration for this exceptionally sophisticated style of painting was a sumptuous jewellery chest held in the Manufactory Museum. Our painter applied white porcelain paint layer by layer with the finest of brushwork to create slightly raised areas conducive to the play of light and shadow: on the front Flora, Goddess of flowers and youth, on the back a music-making cherub. The lavish painting is designed to appear like the "breath of a moment", akin to the delicate images produced by hoar frost. A single moment acts as a means of capturing eternity on this splendid vessel, however.
