"Karneval" figure, H 47 cm

The theme of masquerade and carnival has repeatedly been the inspiration behind modern wall pictures and sculptures by Meissen's Modeller-in-Chief Jörg Danielczyk (*1952) ever since a journey he once made to Venice. Just as, in the wintry city of lagoons, a mask materialises out of nowhere one moment and a Harlequin disappears down the nearest alley the next, his plastic art only offers fleeting impressions of figure and motion. Jörg Danielczyk dissolves figurative form into abstract silhouettes that leave plenty of room for interpretation. He adeptly sounds out porcelain's potential as a moulding material for statuary through the interplay of curves and perfectly positioned angles and edges. Sumptuous gilding channels the beholder's line of vision when taking the figure in. Small areas of colour at intersections create points of focus like glittering jewels. They reduce the figure's magnificent garment to a bare minimum and vibrantly encircle the mask that mysteriously conceals the figure's face. However often and long we look at this masterful work, it never ceases firing our imagination and yet will just as certainly never reveal its secret.
