Lidded Vase "Flower painting after Merian", H 43 cm

Lidded Vase "Flower painting after Merian", H 43 cm

However fresh and crisp the painting in this MEISSEN® Art Works may appear, it is based on work by a very unusual personality from the 17th century: Maria Sibylla Merian (1647 –1717). She was a pioneer in her field with illustrated editions such as “The Caterpillar, Marvelous Transformation and Strange Floral Food” (Nuremberg 1679 –1683) to her name. The source material produced by this naturalist-cum-artist have been meticulously adhered to when painting delphinium, crown imperial, forget-me-not and bear’s ear on Meissen porcelain®, though the composition is new. This is our painters’ way of documenting how modern, artistic and scientifically unmatched Maria Sibylla Merian’s great body of work can be regarded as being. The clever, courageous lady was the first person to demonstrate how the humdrum caterpillar turns into a glorious butterfly and to merge them with the world of flora.
