The flacon, which echoes an ancient covered vessel of oriental origin, is compellingly clean-lined. Its shape and decoration with miniatures have a surprisingly modern look. Four canted sides contain chinoiseries based on motifs by Johann Ehrenfried Stadler (1701-1741), famous for his “fan-bearing Chinese figures” - festively clad individuals who drift around gardens carrying sunshades or fans. Stadler is one of the best porcelain painters specialising in oriental flowers and figural scenes there has ever been. He painted his subjects from a European perspective in much the same way as his artist-in-chief Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696-1775), whom he worked under at Meissen from 1724 onwards. Neither of them ever actually experienced the “Middle Kingdom”. The particular appeal of Stadler’s style of painting is that, unlike Höroldt’s chinoiseries, it invariably has a graphic, two-dimensional quality. He uses the finest of brush strokes to create a succession of parallel areas of coloured hatching like the threads in a piece of silk embroidery - with an aplomb that he had acquired as a faience painter with Eggebrecht in Dresden. Only a few signed items of his are still extant - in the “Art Collection of the Rich Citizens of the Golden Age” in the Rijksmuseum at Amsterdam and in the porcelain collection held by MEISSEN®: little gems that are as alluring now as they ever were.
