Snuff box with "seascape painting", L 8,5 cm

Exquisitely decorated boxes for the storage of snuff were exceedingly popular in the 18th century. The new form of enjoying tobacco hailed from France and soon became fashionable throughout Europe - with snuff boxes to match. These precious gems - which were just as much status symbols then as gold cigarette lighters are now - were used by men of the world to carry their tobacco around with them. The seascape painting on the cover of the present specimen has been executed with extraordinary finesse and attention to detail. Lavish gilt cartouches enclose the harbour scenes, which depict Turkish, Chinese and Dutch merchants surrounded by barrels and bales of merchandise. The hustle and bustle of a schooner port of the time really comes to life in the fanciful scenario depicted on the top of the box.

Said box opens up to reveal a sumptuous fruit still life on the inside of its cover - a miniature painting that is lent added radiance by the 24-carat gold with which the whole of the inside of the box has been embellished. What may at first sight appear to be a diatribe on healthy eating versus tobacco consumption is actually just a whimsical conceit of the sort much beloved in those days. It is also expressive of the indulgent extravagance of Baroque life, in which nothing was done by halves.
