Vase with "Convivial scenes in Saxon vineyards", H 54 cm

MEISSEN® received the order for this prestigious covered vase, a prime example of the late work by legendary porcelain artist Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775), from Rome in 1771. The original design sketch and notes by the then Head of Modelling are still preserved in the MEISSEN® archive of treasures. The great man created the shape from four parts - a base, two body sections and a cover - as was customary at that time. The organic approach he usually championed gives way here, however, to geometric shapes and devices aligned towards Classical Antiquity such as meanders, medallions and garlands. These are typical features of the Louis Seize style datable to the period 1774-1792.
Consummate figure painting of a kind only a few artists are capable of even at MEISSEN® adorns the vase with vineyard scenes and the pastoral entertainments then beloved of the aristocracy. Kaendler's graphic sources took the form of vintage etchings and pictures of such events, known in French as fêtes galantes, by French Rococo painters such as Antoine Watteau or Francois Boucher. Red, hand-daubed areas of ground colour combine with painting in high-carat gold to render the sumptuous decorative detail absolutely perfect. Whoever commissioned this precious piece remains a mystery. What is for sure, though, is that, then as now, the fully-gilded laurel wreath entwining the handle is a fitting accolade to the mastery shown by Meissen's porcelain artists!
