Vase with "hunting scenes after Ridinger" on a yellow ground, H 65 cm

The Saxon Elector and Manufactory founder Augustus the Strong shared two major passions with his son Augustus III - for the fine arts and for hunting. These are simultaneously symbols of a worldliness and power most lavishly articulated in their hunting lodge at Hubertusburg. The ravages of the Seven Years’ War had put an end to all such pomp by 1761, however. It is accordingly all the more amazing that four of an original set of five priceless MEISSEN® mantelshelf vases have survived to the present day. They were modelled by Johann Joachim Kaendler. Talented Höroldt pupil Johann Georg Heintze consummately adorned them with highly detailed par force hunting scenes based on copperplate engravings by Johann Elias Ridinger, famous for his ability to capture the essence of a moment. MEISSEN® made delivery of the famous series to crown the St. Hubert’s Day celebrations on 3 November 1739. It was one of these magnificent covered vases that provided the source material for the new limited edition, which is as finely painted as the original and to which a huntsman imperiously finishing off a predatory wolf is attached - a most masterfully dramatised symbol of power.
