Vase painted with "Floral Scrolls", H 62 cm

Blue ornamental bands bedeck the amphora enclosing floral sprays springing up from rocks. The astounding painting in underglaze blue echoes that on the "Dragoon vases", now part of the Dresden Art Collections and on permanent display in the Zwinger. Unlike the other precious porcelains the Saxon Prince Elector and art collector Augustus the Strong (1670-1733) veritably craved after, the Dragoon vases did not arrive at the Saxon Court directly via dealers or the Dutch East Indies Company. Rather, in 1717 the Prince Elector swapped six hundred equestrians for 152 covered Chinese vases in the possession of the "Soldier King" Frederick Wilhelm I of Prussia (1688-1740). How great must have been his sense of triumph and joy when, in August of that year, he was presented with the first dish painted under the glaze from the manufactory he himself had set up in 1710: decorated in cobalt blue - the colour of kings. It is painted onto the porcelain prior to the processes of enamel firing and glazing and any mistakes made cannot be rectified. There are very few so-called metal-oxide colours that can withstand firing at temperatures of up to around 1,400 degrees Centigrade. Conversely, cobalt blue, chromium-oxide green and iron red make exacting demands of a porcelain painter's artistic skills, since the actual appearance of their work only becomes visible and acquires its dramatic radiance following glost firing. How harmonious the overall impact is depends on how well the painter manages to achieve a balanced mix of lightly washed areas and heavier outlines - as in this feat of art with its veritably regal emanations.
