Vessel with "Chinoiseries after Höroldt", H 29,5 cm

This unusual receptacle with spiralling handles and a high cover - an ice pail in which to keep food fresh - was designed in around 1735 at MEISSEN® for a prestigious courtly table. The women's heads on the handles and the small artichoke finial are stylistic pointers to when the shape, whose historical prototype can be admired in Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, was originally conceived.
Also typical of the age is painted detail that includes a miniature landscape image and opulent chinoiseries from the "Schulz Codex", one of the most comprehensive collections of graphic sources from the Höroldt era at MEISSEN®. Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696-1775), one of the greatest porcelain artists of all, developed a unique palette of thermally stable overglaze paints and hence the prerequisites for a great many new patterns. He is mainly famed for his copybook painting material with scenes from everyday Chinese life, which he had admittedly never actually seen or experienced. They convey the idealised notion Europeans had of the "Middle Kingdom" during the China mania that held sway in the Baroque and Rococo periods. Dragons adorn the cover as beings from a world of fantasy. Sumptuous gilding encloses exceedingly consummate painted decoration in which every fibre of the palm stem and every fold in the characters' clothes can be made out.
