Wall painting, Water Lilies and kingfisher, sign. Limited Masterpieces, lim., 45 x 45 cm

The painter Otto Eduard Gottfried Voigt (1870-1949) brought a gaily coloured kingfisher, of the kind that can occasionally be observed in the meadows along the river Elbe, to life on a MEISSEN® wall plate in the 1920s. Voigt, an artist who produced several consummate art nouveau and floral patterns for MEISSEN® from the start of the 20th century onwards, captures a wondrously perceived moment of Nature with this motif. The shimmering bird lurks noiselessly in branches bordering a pond full of white water lilies, ready to dive down at the right moment to catch a fish - a motif that poses a major artistic challenge when painted in high-fire or underglaze colours. The paint soaks deep into the ceramic body as soon as it is brushed on and there is no way of correcting mistakes. In his re-interpretation on a wall plaque, our porcelain painter Horst Bretschneider has supplemented the motif with engraved detail that gives the picture a consummately structured finish once it has been glazed. He creates additional sparkle with spots of overglaze painting and gilding. Leaves in various shades of gold blend in with the arrangement in a particularly refined and filigree manner. A dazzling performance by the little bird. Good job it can't fly away.
