In Chinese astrology, the zodiac follows a 12-year cycle with each year dedicated to one particular animal. According to legend, Buddha invited the animal kingdom to a new year’s celebration but only twelve showed up. To reward these twelve, Buddha named one year after each animal in the order they arrived: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. To each animal is ascribed certain characteristics which – in combination with the five Chinese elements – are said to have an influence on people born during that year.
2018 is the Chinese Year of the Dog. MEISSEN takes up this theme and transposes it in the style of tone-in-tone painting, employing sumptuous reds and real gold highlights.
On 5 February 2019 begins the Year of the Pig under the earth element. In honour of this revered animal sign, which represents good luck and happiness, MEISSEN presents a collection of varied porcelain pieces with thematic hand painted decorations, as well as a specially developed figurine.
