And it came to pass …

A Christmas story in porcelain

The nights are drawing in and there’s a nip in the air – a time of candlelit cosiness beckons. Pulses race as seasonal fare is cooked and all is got ready for Christmas and the secrets it holds in store.

We wish with our little Christmas exhibition to immerse you in the spirit of the season, to enable you to pause for a moment and revisit the roots of the nativity story. You will be able to discover our Christmas stories in Meissen porcelain in a setting far removed from the general hustle and bustle that precedes the period of celebration. Examples include the Holy Family, the Three Wise Men from the East and the greetings they bear, bells with which to ring in Christmas, tiny angels hovering overhead and, of course, Father Christmas, either humbly dressed in sackcloth and linen or opulently decorated and carrying a sackful of presents. You will be able to witness winter pursuits such as snowball fights, tobogganning and ice-skating as well as the woodland animals to be heard on Christmas Eve. What are they likely to be telling each other? And you will just as readily encounter facets of winter allegories from the 18th century and festive items for your Christmas dining table. Our Father Christmas is also well worth listening to, his chuckled message appearing to be: Don’t be so hard on yourselves and your loved ones. It’s Christmas after all, the festival of love.
