Lidded Vase with Lion Knob "Oriental flower motifs", H 66 cm

If the choice of colours for porcelain were restricted to one, "bleu ordinaire" would surely win the day. The Saxon King was willing to pay a thousand talers to find the scintillating blue he needed in order to fulfil his dream of making porcelains on a par with those from Asia. When the Meissen alchemists started experimenting with cobalt, they soon identified the formula. Royal courts sent Asian splendours of this type to Meissen as of 1725 to have them reproduced there. It wasn"t long before the pieces produced began to outshine the originals and themselves became the ideal for European porcelain art. This majestic covered vase was conceived as a counterpart to its sister from the major tercentennial Meissen Collection issued in 2010, a stupendous masterpiece of underglaze painting. It is also a "counterpart" in the sense that it reflects the history of fruitful interactions between porcelains from East and West.
