The present tray, resembling a wicker basket with typically Baroque ornamental devices and double-twist branch handles, is an excellent case in point for the porcelain developments in the early 18th century. The shape of the piece is harmoniously augmented by intricate flower and insect painting after drawings by the naturalist and painter Maria Sybilla Merian (1647-1717). Her stylish illustrations are known to have already been held in the Manufactory's collection of graphic art in the 18th century. Thenceforth, Meissen porcelain was adorned with motifs such as this one with its delicate hellebore and fritillary and tiny moths, dragonflies and snails.
