This sculpture is an Indian armoured rhinoceros that was designed by Johann Gottlieb Kirchner based on a copper engraving by Abraham de Bruyn from 1583. With fine reliefs, countless sculptural details and intricate surface structure, it is a true masterpiece of embossing that closely mirrors the original drawing, including all of its anatomical incongruities. Kirchner depicted the rhinoceros as if it were wearing a suit of medieval armour - a mythical creature whose reissue has been decorated with equally fantastic, naturalistic roses. The delicate petals, which have been applied to the textured surface, stand in stark contrast to the sculptural depiction of the powerful, warlike beast. Painting these images by hand onto this dynamic porcelain relief, as well as transferring a two-dimensional image onto a spatial object, both require exceptional skill on the part of the painter.
