description
The 19th century subsequently saw a "naturalistic" style of painting take over on porcelain, a genre that, in a departure from mannerism, portrays flowers in all their infinite, richly varied naturalness. Painters now delighted in bringing out a flower's distinctiveness, points of fine detail and irregularities to the very full. The founder of this style, which has strong affinities with Impressionism, was Julius Eduard Braunsdorf (1841-1922). The decoration on the present vase, which was modelled by Ernst August Leuteritz, is an outstanding example of this approach, a gossamer, almost translucent style of flower painting in which the pastel shades of the actual flowers are lent special emphasis by a lush brown ground.
