description
The vase "Watteau painting" combines craft tradition, history and excellence in typically MEISSEN manner. Designed by Johann Joachim Kaendler in around 1735-40, the splendid vase was re-interpreted by Ernst August Leuteritz in around 1862 in the style of the time. It is sumptuously adorned with "volute handles", a helical ornament of ancient columns and gables, as well as characteristic female heads. Artisanal knowledge passed down through the centuries at the Manufactory likewise informs the painting on this masterpiece: reserved within a cobalt-blue ground and an ornate gilt surround are scenes after originals by French rococo painter Jean-Antoine Watteau. The obverse depicts a guitarist playing a ditty to the one he adores, the reverse a gallant with a bird-cage and two ladies admiring the creature inside.
