In an attic pottery the form of the magnificent calyx craters was already created in the 6th century B.C. They were used to mix water and wine. Sophilos is the first known artist of such works of art. Crater vessels like this Meissen work of art found new bloom in classicism. The real art already lies in the production: With a lot of skill and empiricism, weight and size need to be treated by the modeller. The weight of the still wet mass works against its own shape. The drying process and the firing are risky, and the painting surfaces of the huge vessel wall are also a challenge for the porcelain painter. Without seeing the true colours, he works on the rich still life, for they only emerge after the fire. Only the harmonious interplay of embossers and porcelain painters allows such perfect masterpieces to succeed.
