"Antarctica" - Purist design meets functionality
  • In our porcelain manufactory the flora and fauna from all parts of the world have inspired our artists ever since. In the past, as today, the artists and designers at the manufactory sought inspiration in nature and studied it to create new forms. Meissens open-minded view combines the rich heritage with natural reproductions or reduced designs for a modern porcelain world.

MEISSEN product designer Zhuoyu Hou, having Chinese roots, has been working as a product designer at our porcelain manufactory since 2016. Her cultural influence and her love for nature enrich the manufactory in a special way. Because with her designs, she appeals to the modern spirit of the reduced lifestyle.

A popular living trend of the 21st century is purism. Less is more is the principle here and this is often an inner attitude. This means that the focus is on the pure space with its clear lines and colours. Through colourful accents and high-quality, timeless designer pieces - which are often balanced between calm and restlessness - this living style creates harmonious highlights and brings out one's own personality. In keeping with purism, designer Zhuoyu Hou develops naturally beautiful objects that blend stylishly into the clean interior. With inspirations from nature, such as plants, animals or even light reflections, her works are reduced to the essentials and enhance their presence through their versatile uses.

"Natural tension through curves and edges lend the design aesthetics and fit harmoniously into the minimalist spirit of the time."
  • The guiding idea for the development of the "Antarctica" collection came to Zhuoyu Hou when she saw a penguin family in the Arctic ice - dad, mum, a big and a little brother. She transformed the silhouette of the penguins into jugs and vases in her first sketches. The curved shapes contrast with the angular openings and visualise the belly and head of the penguins. Her first models in clay showed the exciting the organic form language with its curves contrasted with the angular, rectilinear elements appeared to the viewer. Since clay is very flexible and adaptable, she was not only able to create a visually appealing design in her work, but also directly consider the feeling. If the proportions of the porcelain match the way it is handled, it will be used more often. Which in turn, according to Zhuoyu Hou, enhances the beauty of the design pieces. With this in mind, the designer has developed jugs that are versatile. Whether as a vase, water carafe, milk jug or gravy boat, the vessels become an absolute eye-catcher in the modern interior.

Around the penguin vases, Zhuoyu Hou developed a whole landscape. Thus, ice floes and Ice Mountains became various bowls, candle holders and cups. She gave all objects a harmoniously reduced aesthetic - entirely in keeping with the purist lifestyle.
