It's a Match: Coffee and Cup
  • When the unique aromatic scent of coffee wafts through your home on a sunny Sunday morning, it's the perfect start to a wonderful day. But where does coffee originally come from, how did it become established in our culture, why does coffee from porcelain cups taste so particularly delicious and how do I find the perfect cup for my favourite coffee?

Around the origin of coffee there are many myths that go back to 900 AD. The term "coffee" is derived from the Arabic word "Kahwe" or "Qahwa", which means life force or strength. The place of origin of Arabica coffee is in Ethiopia. This type of coffee is also the most widespread and reached Europe over Arabia in the 16th century. The myth that coffee served in porcelain cups tastes best probably dates precisely from this period. When the first European porcelain was invented in 1708, not only did the coveted Meissen porcelain enter the royal houses, but coffee culture became increasingly popular. However, coffee, like the famous Meissen porcelain, was an absolute luxury good and remained the preserve of high society. The enjoyment of the noble, aromatic black beverage in handmade pure white porcelain cups was therefore an exclusive speciality and the epitome of fine taste.

It was not until the 19th century, with the beginning of industrialisation and the discovery of another type of coffee, Robusta, that coffee became available to everyone and is now one of the most popular beverages in the world. It is astonishing that people still prefer to enjoy their coffee in a porcelain cup. On the one hand, this is due to the 17th century custom of giving oneself a very special moment of enjoyment, and on the other hand, it is due to the pleasant drinking sensation. For the thick-walled porcelain brings the coffee to drinking temperature. It also suggests to the eye that coffee from a high-quality porcelain cup is also of higher quality and therefore tastes better.

"Exquisite coffee enjoyment combined with our handcrafted, perfected porcelain cups are the culmination of your moment of pleasure."
  • Did you know that after the discovery of the first two types of coffee, Arabica and Robusta, there are now 103 different types of coffee? Nevertheless, it is primarily the two oldest types of coffee that are combined for the perfect bean blend of all coffee specialities. At the same time, coffee variations worldwide are incredibly versatile and range from bean coffee to espresso and cappuccino.

The freshly brewed classic "bean coffee" is best served in medium-sized cups. With a caffeine content of 120 - 140 mg per cup, this popular coffee has the highest caffeine content of all coffee specialities. For this morning pick-me-up, you should opt for a thick-walled, large mug so that your coffee stays warm for a long time and you have enough room for sugar and milk. Designed for everyday use, our modern mugs from "The MEISSEN Mug Collection" with 0.25 l offer the optimum volume for perfect coffee enjoyment all day long.

Did you know that espresso contains less caffeine than an equal amount of bean coffee due to the strong roasting? Only the use of less water in the preparation leads to the higher caffeine content. Accordingly, the small espresso, after a meal or even in between, with a caffeine content of about 25 mg per cup, brings a wonderful energy boost. This is taken to a new level with our elegant espresso cups from the "Vitruv" collection -with fine graphic patterns of lines and columns - because the exclusive cups seem to literally float on your espresso machine. This fantastic illusion is created by the hand-applied base and the groove milled above it. When the espresso, brewed at 92°C, flows at high pressure into the wide-open cup, the aroma can unfold harmoniously. We recommend preheating our thick-walled “Vitruv” cup so that you can enjoy the beverage at a pleasant temperature with its full-bodied, slightly sweet taste right up to the last sip. And for a double portion of power, there would also be room for a double espresso in our cups with 0.1 l volume.

For those who love cappuccinos with a fine milk foam or the impressive latte art, it is important to pay attention to bulbous cups. Our historical "Swan Service" cups with a volume of 0.25 l are the ideal size for a balanced ratio of espresso, warm milk and milk foam for the perfect taste and a smooth mouthfeel. The special feature of the cappuccino cups is that they combine the source of life, water, with its elaborate wave relief and the elixir of life, coffee, to create a power-giving symbolism. The wonderful decor also emphasises the detailed plasticity of the high-quality porcelain with the pair of swans swimming through the reeds.
