The power of yellow: 2021’s "Colour of the Year" at MEISSEN
  • Warm, lively and optimistic – this year has seen the renowned Pantone Color Institute name not one, but two “Colours of the Year" for 2021. The subdued “Ultimate Grey” along with the zesty yellow hue "Illuminating" are projected to set the tone in fashion, interior and product design in the months to come. This first-time announcement of two colours is steeped in symbolism and highlights the interplay of independent elements to express a message of togetherness and optimism. Assigning such great symbolic value to colours has also played an important role at MEISSEN and has been subject to changing fashions over the course of the manufactory's 300-year history – from the opulent 2021 limited edition lidded vase "Secret Garden" with the eponymous Vide-Poche and matching mug, to exquisite pieces of jewellery with yellow gold ornamentation or luminous artwork with yellow highlights, cheerful peace prints and yellow-marbled koi boxes.
"The colour yellow owes its manifold expressions to its unique radiance, employed by Chinese emperors, Christian iconographies and nature alike. "
  • Within the spectrum of colours, hardly any other exhibits such symbolic ambiguity and inner tensions as yellow: on the one hand, the colour of sunlight and enlightenment, on the other, nature’s warning sign. The colour owes its plethora of meanings to its unique radiance, which has both signalling and long-distance effect. In China during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1922), yellow was considered an imperial colour, its use reserved only for emperors. In its golden-yellow hue, the colour was employed at European courts as a symbol of opulence, splendour and enlightenment. This everlasting golden radiance is contrasted by lighter yellows, such as Pantone's "Illuminating", whose message is more cheerful and light-hearted, embodying new ideas and flowering interest.

In gardening and floral arrangements, too, yellow flowers brighten a wide variety of compositions with inimitable radiance and cheerfulness. From mimosas and daffodils in spring to coneflowers, marigolds and sunflowers in summer – these blossoms’ exhilarating effect is hardly lost on any beholder. A symbolic potency that has also given rise to the popularity and diversity of flower painting at MEISSEN.
Yellow also plays an elemental role in the "Royal Blossom" jewellery collection. Rings, necklaces and earrnigs in radiant yellow gold provide a sunny, warm contrast to the filigree porcelain blossoms’ immaculate white, lending the jewellery a graceful aura and air of foreverness.
And so, be it the opulent gold embellishments or radiant yellow colour foundation within the "B-Form" service, "MEISSEN® Cosmopolitan’s" contemporary designs or golden "Royal Blossom" jewellery – this year’s colour of the year finds countless expressions in the traditional craftsmanship that is MEISSEN porcelain. Be sure to incorporate yours and ring in 2021 with strength and positivity.
