Most pieces from the manufactory can be cleaned in the dishwasher: whether a product is dishwasher-safe or not can be found in the product details online. These details will also inform you whether your dishware is microwave-safe. Hand-painted porcelain should always be washed by hand using a soft cloth.
Under-glaze painting differs from its over-glaze counterpart in the following ways. As the name suggests, under-glaze paints are applied before glazing and the subsequent firing at 1,400°C. The glaze effectively protects the hand-painted décor and ensures the finished product is dishwasher-safe. In contrast, over-glaze painting involves applying colors directly onto the white, glazed, and smooth-fired porcelain – usually fired at around 900°C, often requiring multiple firings. Such pieces are not dishwasher-safe and should always be washed by hand. There are also in-glaze decorations, which are fired at around 1,100°C, resulting in a stronger bond between the paint and the glaze. These items are usually dishwasher-safe.
Biscuit Porcelain
Despite lacking glaze, biscuit surfaces, due to their pore-free density at high firing temperatures, have similar properties in terms of hardness, strength, and resistance to abrasion as glazed porcelain. The characteristic silky-smooth feel is the result of a special polishing process applied after firing at about 1,400°C. The finished product is microwave-safe, dishwasher-safe, and even resistant to stubborn dirt such as acidic or highly staining substances. MEISSEN carefully polishes the surfaces by hand, smoothing the previously rough biscuit surface to ensure no dirt clings to it.
