Urban Colors

Tradition and modernity - MEISSEN combines traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design in an unprecedented way. For the new collection “The Original”, the MEISSEN porcelain manufactory draws on the valuable treasure of over 300 years of history to create a unique service for the modern table. The origins of the décor can be traced back to the first half of the 18th century. Around 1730, the first variations of the world-famous onion pattern were created on European hard porcelain at the MEISSEN porcelain manufactory. Inspired by motifs on Chinese porcelain and faience, the Meissen blue painters developed the iconic cobalt blue Meissen onion pattern, which became the manufactory's best-known underglaze painting. The decoration was given the name “onion pattern” due to the melon, which was unknown in 18th century Europe and was mistaken for an onion and, in combination with the peach, still adorns the plate flag today. Before the pattern known today as the classic onion pattern became established, there were several variations at the same time

Urban ColorsThe development of the Urban Color series, as part of “The Original” collection, also focused on a renaissance of Meissen icons. In meticulous coordination with the colors of existing MEISSEN services, plates with a unique combination of bright background colors and an elegant color or gold rim were created. The Urban Colors plates are therefore versatile and can be individually combined with numerous MEISSEN collections as desired.
