Incidentally, this began back in 1907, when Lawrence Luellen invented the first modern paper cup. At that time, temperance wagons traveled around distributing water as an alternative to alcohol, which was drunk from communal cups. As a "health cup", it was intended to be a hygienic alternative for this occasion, which everyone could use for themselves and then throw away afterwards. The cup continued to evolve over the decades until the first coffee was sold in a takeaway paper cup in a 7-Eleven in New York in 1964.
