2022 - The Year of the Tiger
  • The Chinese New Year was celebrated in 2022 on 1 February. Also known as the Spring Festival, it ushered in the new year and with it another zodiac sign. According to legend, the Jade Emperor Yu invited the entire animal kingdom to a race across a river. The first twelve winning animals to cross the river were to receive a place in the Chinese horoscope in the order of their arrival.

The year 2022 is the year of the tiger, which reached the other shore third after the rat and the buffalo. More precisely, according to Chinese mythology, 2022 is the year of the water tiger. This is because the twelve Chinese zodiac signs are also based on the lunar calendar. A complete cycle consists of 60 lunar years and every five years a new element - water, metal, fire, wood and earth - enters the cycle.

The special aspect of the zodiac signs is that human characteristics are attributed to them, which - in addition to the five Chinese elements - are supposed to have an influence on life. All people born in 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010 or 2022 bear the zodiac sign Tiger. The following characteristics are attributed to this animal:

The tiger stands for self-confidence and authority. If he wants to achieve something, he takes every risk, because he is very aware of his many abilities as well as weaknesses. Accordingly, tigers are idealists who can be just as passionate as they are indulgent and caring. When they make decisions, they stand behind them consciously and with discipline. The element of water has a balancing effect on the fiery tiger, which ensures serenity and compassion for those born under this zodiac sign.

"Determined and perceptive like the tiger itself, two MEISSEN artists interpret the zodiac sign in a unique way and create porcelain figurines that captivate the viewer."
  • Two MEISSEN artists have taken a closer look at the twelve zodiac signs and interpreted the animal of the year 2022 - the tiger - in their own way.

Maria Walther approaches the zodiac sign from a holistic perspective. In designing her sculpture, she attached great importance to opening up a new perspective on the symbolic tiger figurine for the viewer. Her interpretation illustrates the energy with which the tiger lifts itself out of the water with its strong legs. His gaze is energetically directed towards the finishing straight in order to reach the other side of the river as quickly as possible. To ensure that the strong tiger also embodies its respectful appearance as a pure white porcelain figurine, Maria Walther has created the typical attributes as a relief. The result is an interplay of light and shadow, which darkens the contours and gives the tiger its characteristic appearance, without any staffage.

Silke Ebermann was also inspired by Chinese astrology and deliberately broke away from a purely naturalistic representation of the tiger in her interpretation. She belittled the yearly figure by means of a detailed form and a fine painting, which puts the childlike big eyes of the tiger cub in the focus. The staffage around the lovely eyes is discreetly restrained and emphasises the soft contours. Silke Ebermann thus underlines the affectionate and indulgent character traits of the strong tiger.

The meaningful legacy of the Chinese zodiac sign "Tiger" could hardly be interpreted more differently and at the same time shows how diverse the world of Meissens "White Gold" is.
