Figure Group Sled Ride

With the magnificent figure group "Sled Ride", Johann Joachim Kaendler created an extraordinary masterpiece of Baroque porcelain art around 1735. Full of movement, humor, and narrative sophistication, the scene transports the viewer into the dazzling world of the Saxon court.

Seated in the elaborately decorated sleigh is the court jester Gottfried Schmiedel, disguised as a lady. Behind him stands his companion Joseph Fröhlich, wearing his characteristic pointed hat. A mischievous monkey, offering Schmiedel a carrot, lends the scene special charm. The powerfully rearing horse, with its splendid bell-trimmed caparison, brings striking dynamism to the composition.

Fascinating is the masterful execution of countless details: the sweeping sleigh runners, finely modeled ornaments, sculpted fabric folds, and the elaborate horse harness. A particular technical challenge is posed by the delicate reins, which stretch in graceful arcs between horse and sleigh. Their production and attachment demand the utmost precision and exceptional skill.

The rich, entirely hand-painted staffage completes this work of art. Delicate floral painting, finely nuanced coat markings, luminous gold accents, and lovingly crafted details bring the scene to life.

The Sleigh Ride uniquely combines Kaendler's creative imagination, Baroque humor, and the masterful craftsmanship of the MEISSEN porcelain manufactory. It is a captivating miniature of courtly life that reveals something new from every angle.
