description
The monumental sculpture "Heron in the Reeds" in Meissen porcelain ranks among the most impressive animal representations in European porcelain art. It continues the tradition of the monumental animal figures created in the eighteenth century under the direction of Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775). With its lifelike design, finely modelled plumage and compelling composition, the figure combines artistic expression with exceptional craftsmanship.
The creation of such animal sculptures is closely linked to the ambitions of Augustus the Strong. For the Japanese Palace in Dresden, the founder of the Meissen porcelain manufactory envisioned a unique porcelain menagerie. An inventory from 1733 lists several hundred animals and birds of various species, intended to demonstrate the capabilities of Europe's first porcelain manufactory. The heron was among the figures planned for this extraordinary undertaking.
The sculpture captures the elegant water bird in a moment of intense concentration. Motionless, it stands among dense reeds, its long neck extended and powerful beak directed attentively towards the ground. Every feather has been modelled with great care, lending the figure remarkable vitality. At the base of the scene, a small frog hides among the plants. Whether it will escape the heron's watchful gaze remains uncertain. It is precisely this narrative tension that gives the composition its distinctive appeal.
The heron consists of nearly 40 individually modelled components, assembled with utmost precision by experienced craftsmen. It stands as an impressive testament to the long-standing artistry of the Meissen porcelain manufactory and its enduring fascination with the natural world.
