The New Delhi-based artist duo Thukral & Tagra - Jiten Thukral and Sumir Tagra - is among the internationally recognized voices in contemporary Indian art. Their work combines sculpture, design, and installation with social questions, urban visual worlds, and a visual language that is often playful while also being rich in symbolic meaning.

During their residency at the Meissen Art Campus, the artists developed a series of contemporary porcelain sculptures based on historic Meissen models. In doing so, they bring traditional craftsmanship together with motifs that speak of mobility, visions of the future, and human longing.

This unique piece explores the dream of departure and the human capacity to imagine new horizons. At the center of the painting are hot-air balloons floating across the surface of the vessel. As symbols of freedom, adventure, and discovery, they embody the desire to rise above existing boundaries and gain new perspectives.

Their upward movement lends the object a sense of lightness and points to the power of hope and imagination. Particularly striking is the depiction of a larger balloon whose basket is carried by a blooming garden. The combination of floral elements and flying apparatus brings nature and movement together in a poetic image.

Growth, creativity, and renewal are linked here with the idea of travel and personal progress. The finely executed painting creates a deliberate contrast with the clear white porcelain surface and draws attention to the narrative quality of the motifs.

The composition is completed by a weathervane mounted on the lid. As a classic instrument for determining wind direction and orientation, it adds the idea of navigation to the visual language of departure.
