Single Figurine Squirrel

This cheeky squirrel figurine made of Böttger stoneware, designed by Meissen artist Maria Walther, combines artistic design with the craft tradition of the MEISSEN porcelain manufactory. Her goal was to depict the nimble, lively nature of the animal in motion and without a base. This makes the squirrel appear as if it is scurrying freely across a table or chest of drawers. The staging with a second figurine positioned in the opposite direction is particularly exciting, creating a lively dialogue between the forms.

The work is made of Böttger stoneware-a material developed by Johann Friedrich Böttger around 1710 that is considered the precursor to European porcelain. It is characterized by its high strength and characteristic reddish-brown color, which gives the figure a warm, almost organic-looking surface.

The MEISSEN porcelain manufactory, founded in 1710, is the oldest of its kind in Europe and still stands for excellent craftsmanship today. From design to production, all figures are created using traditional handcrafting techniques. MEISSEN combines classic values with contemporary design - as can be seen in Maria Walther's interpretation of the squirrel.
