Genius, Visionary, Pioneer: MEISSEN Artist Peter Strang
  • On July 7, Peter Strang celebrates his 85th birthday. A wonderful occasion to honor and review the life of the artist and his work for MEISSEN.
Peter Strang is a graduate sculptor and creator of Meissen Modernism in the field of porcelain sculpture. He was born in Dresden in 1936 and learned the profession of a modeller in the porcelain manufactory from 1950 to 1954. Extraordinary talent led Strang to the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, where he studied sculpture from 1955 to 1960, graduating as a sculptor. Returning to Meissen, he initially turned to figurative work, especially animal depiction.
Perseverance and conviction always helped him to maintain and assert his artistic interests. When the artists' group of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory was founded in 1960, he was one of its members. For the period after 1960, his figurative model porcelains are decisive for MEISSEN and are still very popular among collectors and enthusiasts.
With artistic mastery and a high level of personal commitment, Strang devoted himself to the design of table accessories and, in particular, to the depiction of the human being of our time. Tranquility, agitation, relaxation and tension - all varieties of human sensations he is able to generalize compositionally with his artistic handwriting.
"With the ability to bring out all varieties of human feelings in his figurines, Strang set artistic standards as a modeller and later as chief sculptor."
  • His works of the recent years are characterised by an intensive decoration of the figurative works, through which Peter Strang presents the wide colour spectrum of the manufactory. An increasingly higher degree of abstraction also accompanies his works. On the occasion of his 85th birthday, MEISSEN is presenting a special edition depicting a porcelain painter and a sculptor - a self-portrait while working on his famous figure "Utz". The special edition also includes the clown "Künstlerkapelle mit Saxophon" (artist's band with saxophone), which is limited to 85 pieces, and another clown that Peter Strang designed back in 1987. These figures have now been reissued and are additionally marked with the year 2021.
For his outstanding artistic achievements, Peter Strang was awarded the Saxon Order of Merit in 2000 and the Federal Cross of Merit in 2007. He is already a part of the great history of Europe's oldest porcelain manufactory for us.
