description
Explosive, eccentric, surreal, and yet deeply rooted in tradition: with this one-of-a-kind vase, David Torres playfully connects more than 300 years of European art and porcelain history. The historic form becomes the stage for a fanciful pictorial world full of humor, poetry, and cultural contrasts.

Drawing on the famous toile de Jouy textiles of the 18th century, a delicate monochrome painting in soft violet unfolds across a bright yellow ground. Instead of idyllic scenes of French country life, the viewer encounters a surreal dreamscape: a meditating sloth perches on a lush floral arrangement, while a hippopotamus wearing a party hat lingers beside an oversized bag of popcorn in an exotic landscape.

These whimsical motifs carry personal references to the artist's Colombian homeland. The hippopotamus recalls the unusual history of these animals in Colombia, and the popcorn points to the importance of maize as a traditional staple food. The bananas along the upper rim address the region's monoculture plantations and give this playful visual language a social dimension.

European plant worlds merge with tropical vegetation, while hot-air balloons drift across the sky. The sloth stands for serenity and joie de vivre, and the balloons speak of freedom and the power of dreams.

The bright yellow glaze, fine gold accents, and masterful porcelain painting lend this one-of-a-kind piece its distinctive expressive force. Reality and fiction, history and the present, Europe and South America enter into a compelling dialogue. In this way, David Torres reinterprets the cultural heritage of the MEISSEN manufactory in a manner that is both idiosyncratic and contemporary.
